Overview

The Dead Horse Rim Loop Trail offers a sweeping tour of one of Utah’s most breathtaking mesa-top viewpoints. Located inside Dead Horse Point State Park, this 5-mile loop follows the edge of the plateau, giving hikers nonstop views of the canyons carved by the Colorado River far below. The trail passes through juniper forest, open slickrock, and dramatic sandstone outcroppings. It is a perfect choice for sunrise or sunset when the light hits the canyon walls with golden and red hues.

If you only have a half day and want to soak in some of the most iconic views near Moab without the crowds of Arches or Canyonlands, the Dead Horse Rim Loop Trail should be at the top of your list.

Trail Description

The Rim Loop Trail is a combination of the East Rim and West Rim trails, connected by short crossover spurs. You can hike the loop in either direction, starting from the visitor center or the Dead Horse Point overlook. Going clockwise offers a dramatic crescendo as the trail approaches the park’s famous overlook.

The West Rim Trail is more rugged and wild, skirting close to the cliff edges with unobstructed canyon views. Watch for cairns that mark the path across slickrock. The East Rim Trail is more mellow, with smoother tread and shaded spots under the pinyon and juniper trees. There are multiple spur trails along the way that lead to picnic areas and additional overlooks. Each one is worth the short detour.

Even though this hike is relatively flat, the full loop covers exposed terrain. Be prepared with sun protection and plenty of water. There is little shade, especially on the West Rim.

Getting There

From Moab, head north on Highway 191 for about 10 miles. Turn left onto Utah 313 and follow the signs for Dead Horse Point State Park. The entrance fee is required, and the trail begins near the Visitor Center or the Dead Horse Point overlook parking area.
