What to Expect on the Hiking Trail

The East Rim Trail begins at the iconic Dead Horse Point Overlook and follows the edge of the plateau. The trail hugs the rim of the mesa with multiple pullouts for panoramic views. Along the route, hikers can take in dramatic overlooks of the Colorado River nearly 2,000 feet below, with sculpted canyons stretching as far as the eye can see.

This trail is particularly appealing to visitors who want a scenic hike without the technical demands of more rugged terrain. The wide, hard-packed path is family friendly and suitable for hikers of all experience levels.

You will walk past twisted juniper trees, desert wildflowers in season, and ancient rock formations that frame the trail like a natural gallery. If you are hiking in the late afternoon, bring a camera—the golden light as the sun sets over the canyons is nothing short of spectacular.

Trail Connections

The East Rim Trail links up with the West Rim Trail, forming a longer loop for those who want to explore more of the park. You can hike out and back on the East Rim Trail, or make a loop using the West Rim and returning along the Visitor Center Connector Trail. The combined loop is about 5 miles total.

This makes the East Rim Trail a good option if you are deciding between a shorter hike and something more adventurous within the same trail system.

Getting There

From Moab, head north on US 191 for about 9 miles. Turn left onto UT 313 and follow signs for Dead Horse Point State Park. After about 22 miles, you will reach the park entrance. Continue through the entrance station and follow the main road to the Dead Horse Point Overlook Parking Lot at the end of the road. The trail starts just past the main overlook.

Note that there is a park entrance fee, and rangers are typically available to answer questions at the visitor center, which is located just before the overlook road.
