Getting to the Trailhead from Moab

From downtown Moab, head north on US-191 for about 5 miles to the Arches National Park entrance. After passing through the entrance station, continue on the Arches Scenic Drive for approximately 16 miles. Look for signs directing you to the Sand Dune Arch Parking Area on your right. The parking lot is paved, with space for passenger vehicles and a few RVs. This lot also serves Broken Arch and Tapestry Arch trails.

Trail Description

The trail to Sand Dune Arch begins on a flat, sandy path leading toward a gap between tall sandstone fins. As you step between the narrow walls, the temperature noticeably cools and the light shifts, creating a shaded, peaceful corridor. Within moments, you arrive at a small open space where the arch reveals itself by gracefully spanning between the rock walls above a floor of deep red sand.

The sand here is unusually soft and fine, making it a favorite spot for kids to play while adults admire the unique formation. Because the arch is enclosed by tall walls, it often feels like a hidden desert alcove, away from the wind and sun.

Highlights

  • Deep, soft sand underfoot for a barefoot-friendly walk

  • Shaded corridor — a welcome break from the heat on summer days

  • Quick, easy access from the main park road

  • Close to Broken Arch and Tapestry Arch for those wanting a longer hike

Best Time to Visit

  • Spring (March–May): Mild temperatures make this an excellent time for a short visit before or after other hikes.

  • Summer (June–August): Visit in early morning or late evening to avoid midday heat. The shaded fins make this one of the cooler hikes in the park.

  • Fall (September–November): Cooler days and golden evening light make for beautiful photography.

  • Winter (December–February): Fewer visitors and the possibility of snow in the sand create a unique contrast.

Tips for your visit:

  1. Go barefoot if the sand is cool — it’s soft and pleasant to walk on.
  2. Stay in the shade on hot summer days to avoid overheating.
  3. Bring water, even for this short hike, as Arches has no water stations beyond the visitor center.
  4. Combine with nearby trails — Broken Arch and Tapestry Arch are accessible from the same parking area.
  5. Photographers: Midday is best if you want even light on the arch itself; early morning and late evening create more dramatic shadows.

  1. Leave No Trace
  2. While this area feels like a natural playground, remember to respect the arch and surrounding rock walls. Avoid climbing on the arch itself and pack out all trash.
