A Change in Altitude

After days spent under Moab’s red rock sun, driving up into the La Sal Mountains feels like entering another season. The air cools, the light softens, and suddenly you’re surrounded by pine and aspen instead of sandstone. At 9,400 feet, Warner Lake is a high-alpine oasis where desert adventurers go to breathe, recharge, and wander through meadows filled with wildflowers.

Trail Overview

The Warner Lake area isn’t one single trail — it’s a compact system of loops and connectors, each offering a slightly different experience.

1. Warner Lake Loop (1 mile)

A gentle walk around the lake’s edge. Perfect for families, photographers, or anyone needing a peaceful stroll. The path weaves through aspen groves with open views across the water toward Haystack Mountain.

Local Tip: The light is magical here before 9 a.m. or just before sunset, when the mountains reflect gold on the lake’s surface.

2. Dry Fork Trail (2.5 miles one-way)

Starts behind the campground and climbs gradually through forested slopes. It’s quiet, shaded, and often carpeted with wildflowers in July.

3. Burro Pass Trail Connection

More advanced hikers can link into Burro Pass, part of the famous Whole Enchilada route. Expect steep switchbacks, occasional snow patches into June, and huge views toward the red desert below.

Getting There

From downtown Moab, drive south on US-191 for 8 miles, then turn left onto Old Airport Road (which becomes La Sal Mountain Loop Road). Follow this scenic mountain road for 20 miles until you see a sign for Warner Lake Campground. Turn right onto Forest Road 0064 and continue 2.5 miles on well-graded gravel to reach the lake.

Allow 45 minutes from Moab. The road is passable for most vehicles in summer but can be rough after heavy rain or snowmelt.

What to Expect

At this elevation, Warner Lake feels worlds away from the desert. Temperatures are 15–25°F cooler than in town, and the air smells like pine and wet earth.

  • Summer: Expect lush green slopes and mild days; rain showers often roll in during the afternoon.

  • Fall: The aspen groves turn gold — this is one of Utah’s most photogenic autumn spots.

  • Winter/Spring: The road typically closes due to snow; check local conditions before heading up.

Bring layers, even in July, and plan for unpredictable weather.

Camping & Facilities

The Warner Lake Campground has 19 shaded sites, picnic tables, and vault toilets. Most sites are tent-friendly with lake or forest views.
