Ideal for a quick outing or a sunset stroll, this trail leads visitors along a well-marked path to a remote overlook that feels far from the crowds. With its relatively flat terrain and open vistas, the Bighorn Overlook Trail is a favorite among photographers, families, and anyone looking to enjoy the serenity of Dead Horse Point without committing to a longer loop.
Why Hike This Trail
If you are looking for a quieter trail in Dead Horse Point State Park with big views and minimal effort, the Bighorn Overlook Trail is a top choice. The trail offers expansive canyon views almost immediately and culminates in a peaceful overlook where hikers can spot desert bighorn sheep, soaring raptors, and the deep curves of the Colorado River far below. The trail is suitable for all ages and offers a rich reward in a short distance.
Trail Description
Starting from the main Visitor Center, the trail branches off from the East Rim Trail and skirts along the edge of the mesa. The terrain is mostly packed dirt with sections of slickrock, and cairns mark the route where the path crosses open rock. The trail is mostly exposed, so bring sun protection and plenty of water. Along the way, you will encounter interpretive signs and benches where you can pause and take in the sweeping views of canyon country. The overlook at the end is one of the most peaceful spots in the park, with fewer visitors and a nearly 300-degree panoramic view.
Best Time to Hike
Bighorn Overlook Trail can be hiked year round, but the best time to visit is during the cooler months from October to April. Early morning and late evening hikes are especially beautiful, as the changing light enhances the textures and colors of the surrounding cliffs and spires. Sunrise offers soft pastels, while sunset lights up the canyons in glowing red and gold.
